Zengeance is a young three-piece band centred in Bellville, South Africa. Inspired by anything from Cool jazz to Death metal, we play our own mix of blues-, funk-, psychedelic-, indie-, pop-, garage- and punk rock.

The band was created in 2014 when vocalist/guitarist Erick Zulch convinced his friends Wian Brand (bass) and Lafras Uys (drums) to form a band with him. The fact that neither of them owned instruments did not seem like an obstacle. The plan was to use the band as a means to appear cool and get girlfriends. Somehow it never worked, and instead we accidentally made two studio recordings.

The first is a four song EP,  ‘Black Pistol’, recorded at Farmyard Studios in 2015 (Recorded when we were just 15 years old).

The second is a full-length album, ‘A Suburban Manifesto’, recorded at Valve House Studios early 2017, produced by Albert Frost (Recorded in our Grade 12 year when we were 17 years old). We think it encapsulates everything we are rather well, and you should check it out.

Black Pistol is available on Soundcloud and A Suburban Manifesto on Apple Music, I-Tunes, CD Baby etc.

On the name:

‘Zengeance’ was chosen by Dirk Ace when he refused to book us without a name for the umpteenth time.  For a year we’d been unable to decide on a name, despite numerous ‘great’ ideas. Highlights include ‘Firetrain’, ‘Fokofpinochio’, ‘The Fox and the Hound’, ‘Sex at the Foxhole’, and ‘Swaggy McPimpalado and the Morphine Needles’.
